Dear Watermark Church family,

“[be] of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.” Philippians 2:3,4

Frankly, when we work together with others, sometimes we step on one another’s toes! When the Apostle Paul wrote this passage in a letter to the Philippians, his aim was to promote unity in the church there. Two women, Euodia and Syntyche, were struggling with being united, and Paul wanted them to take a different course.

Rather than putting their interests, needs, opinions and preferences first, he encourages them to put the other person’s interests ahead of theirs.

In a gracious way, Paul was saying to the church, “Your disagreements reveal that there is a spiritual problem in your fellowship. It isn’t going to be solved by rules or threats; it’s going to be solved when your hearts are right with Christ and with each other.”

The basic cause of conflicts among us is selfishness. The cause of selfishness is pride. There can be no unity or joy in the life of the Christian who puts himself above others. Yet there is great joy and unity when we defer to the interests of others.

Join us this Sunday at 10:30am at Watermark Church as we look at the example of Jesus, who laid down His life for us as an example of putting others first!
