Dear Watermark Church family,

“Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19,20

What is the purpose or mission of our church? Simply put, it is to lead people into a growing relationship with Christ. As a member of the church, or the body of Christ, this has implications for your purpose in life as well! For you are on a mission from God and for God!

Charles Haddon Spurgeon, one of the greatest 19th Century English preachers and theologians is quoted saying: “Every Christian is either a missionary or an imposter.” He pastored one of the first megachurches of the modern era, The Metropolitan Tabernacle, in London. Thousands of people believed in Jesus under his ministry and it’s estimated that he preached to upwards of 10 million people over the course of his life.

Do you think that he meant that all Christians are to be missionaries and relocate to various parts of the world and serve in cross-cultural contexts, miles away from

their home, family and friends?

In Spurgeon’s mind, at the heart of what it means to be a Christian is that you live your life as a missionary, regardless of where you live. God calls us to a life of faithfulness and obedience wherever we are found. Regardless of our personal preferences and cultural bias, our purpose is that we live as one who has been sent by God - a modern day missionary!

In what ways does the term ‘missionary’ resonate in relation to your job, your family, your relationships, and your life goals and plans?

Spend a moment thinking about what the Bible says about being available to God as His missionary:

- Isaiah 6:8,9 Then I (Isaiah) heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” God said, “Go and tell this people…”

- 2 Corinthians 5:19,20 “And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.”

- John 20:21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” (That’s us!)

Does the call of God for us to be missionaries shape and define your life and purpose on a daily basis? What first step can you take this week to be more intentional with the life purpose of making disciples of Christ?
