Dear Watermark Church family,
“Take the time and trouble to keep yourself spiritually fit. Bodily fitness has limited value, but spiritual fitness is of unlimited value, for it holds promise both for this present life and for the life to come.”1 Timothy 4:7,8 (Phillips translation)
As the new year approaches, setting personal goals for your health, relationships, career or finances is a common practice for many people! For example, health club and fitness center memberships swell as people resolve to discipline their bodies, in order to feel, look and last better.
Have you thought about setting goals in your spiritual life? These 5 spiritual disciplines listed below are helpful habits to help us grow and “bear fruit” as followers of Christ.
Prayerfully consider these goals and pick at least one area to develop into a consistent habit in your life in 2019!
Here are five 2019 spiritual discipline goals:
1. A daily time alone with God
“In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and was praying there.” Mark 1:35
- Focus on personal prayer and Bible study
2. A consistent heart of giving
Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.” Malachi 3:10
- Contributing my time, talent and treasure to God
3. Being part of a team for God
“Do not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day (of Jesus’ return) approaching.” Hebrews 10:25
- Fellowship with believers in a small group
4. Using my gifts and abilities for God’s glory
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” 1 Peter 4:1 - Ministry based on my spiritual gifts
5. Telling others about Jesus and His love
“But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” 1 Peter 3:15
- Effectively sharing my own “life message” with people I have in my life
My hope is that practicing these spiritual disciplines will result in you having a greater knowledge of Jesus and a wider influence for Him in your personal life, your family, your church, your workplace, and in your community in the coming year!
