Dear Watermark Church family,

“[Jesus] spoke by way of a parable: “The sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell beside the road, and it was trampled under foot and the birds of the air ate it up. 6 Other seed fell on rocky soil, and as soon as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. 7 Other seed fell among the thorns; and the thorns grew up with it and choked it out. 8 Other seed fell into the good soil, and grew up, and produced a crop a hundred times as great.” As He said these things, He would call out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

11 “Now the parable is this: the seed is the word of God. 12 Those beside the road are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they will not believe and be saved. 13 Those on the rocky soil are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no firm root; they believe for a while, and in time of temptation fall away. 14 The seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with worries and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity. 15 But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance.” Luke 8:4-15

The greatest message you will ever hear is the Good News of forgiveness and eternal life through a relationship with Jesus. The message of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection gives new life to all who will put their faith in Him. But why does the gospel message bear fruit in some people and in others, it does not?

Jesus explains why in the parable of the sower and the seed. In this illustration, the determining factor in bearing fruit is not the sower or the seed. It is the soil, which represents the heart of the hearer.

Some people hear the message of Christ and simply do not understand or believe in the gift of salvation God is offering by faith. Others receive the message initially, but abandon it when trials or troubles come in life. Still others embrace the message of the gospel for a short while, but allow the worries and riches and pleasures of this life to choke it out.

How does the message of the cross bear fruit? When it is grows in the soil of an “honest and good heart.” This type of heart is a humble heart, acknowledging “there is a God, and it isn’t me.” This type of heart is also a repentant heart, fully aware of the need to agree with God about the reality of sin and the need for forgiveness.

If you are someone who is seeking God, humbly allow the message of Jesus’ love and forgiveness to enter your heart. Agree with God about your sin (repent), turn to Christ for forgiveness, and allow His Holy Spirit to bear the fruit of Christlikeness in your life.

If you are already a Christ follower, pray for God to lead you to people who have an “honest and good heart,” and share the seed of the gospel of Jesus Christ with them. There is no greater joy than to see others turn to Christ and begin to bear fruit for eternity!
