Dear Watermark Church family,

“At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.

…At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”

11 “No one, sir,” she said.

“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

I have often assumed that the woman caught in adultery in John 8 very likely became a disciple of Jesus. What would make her follow Him? Discipleship always begins with one common element in a person’s life: intimacy with God. An encounter with God. A firsthand experience of being loved by God, being forgiven, being accepted by Christ, experiencing God’s love and provision. That is what happened to her the day she met Jesus.

For the disciple of Jesus Christ, BEING always proceeds DOING. DOING always follows BEING.

Only after she BECAME forgiven did Jesus declare for her something to DO, namely, “leave your life of sin.” The goal of discipleship is inward TRANSFORMATION, not outward DEEDS.

At the heart of discipleship is simply seeing Who Jesus is and seeing who I now AM in Christ. The disciple is first BEING before they are DOING.

The primary goal for a disciple of Christ is intimacy with Him. It is intimacy with Jesus – (a close relationship, an abiding in Him, a depth of communion with Him), that will be the catalyst for Christian service, church attendance, tithing, obedience, sacrifice and agreeing with the Holy Spirit about our daily sins.

The command of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19,20) was given to the disciples by Jesus only after an intense 3½ year period of intimacy with His disciples, modeling to them the heart and will of the Father. What Jesus was telling His followers is that the starting point for discipleship, and the sustaining foundation for finishing strongly for Christ over the years, is intimacy with Christ.

I must be close to Jesus if I aspire to help others draw near to Him. Where does a person go to get closer with God? Does it really matter where or when? Just prioritize time alone with Him each day, through prayer, reading His Word and crying out to Him for your daily needs. Attempting to live a Christian life without knowing Jesus better each day is a burden God does not want you to carry. Draw near to him today, and He will draw near to you. Walking with Jesus is the only way to live your Christian Life!
