Dear Watermark Church family,

But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.  – 2 Timothy 4:5

We live in a world of sorrow. Adam sinned and brought death into the world. Jesus our Savior entered the world to restore what Adam lost. It is this gospel that we preach. But preaching this gospel message comes at a great price.

Because of the sorrow in this world, mankind loves to escape. When things get tough, people escape to alcohol, drugs, sports, or the movie theater. Whatever will help us forget about the sorrow in this world, people seek in order to function in a world of sin. But Paul had another way for his young disciple, Timothy.

As Paul is nearing the end of his life, he exhorts Timothy to escape from escapism. He urges Timothy to be sober in all things—to keep his wits about him when life gets difficult. Paul tells him to endure hardship, not to seek comfort and leisure. He directs Timothy to be a worker in the gospel and to fulfill his ministry.

The gospel message is a message of hope. We know there will be a day when sorrow will disappear. When Jesus Christ appears, there will be no crying or mourning or pain. But those who preach the gospel in this world do so while crying and mourning and in pain. Our Savior walked the path of suffering. And so will we if we hope to pass on the good news of the gospel to others.

Many today have a “happy go lucky” view of Christianity—one without trials or tears. But this is not the life God has ordained for us.

As Watchman Nee said, “To keep our hand on the plow while wiping away our tears—that is Christianity.” (This article was submitted by John Hopler to Faithwalkers Journal. If you are interested in reading a paper copy of this month’s Faithwalkers Journal, please click here to download the printable version.)
