Dear Watermark Church family,
Jesus said - “Love one another the way I loved you. This is the very best way to love. Put your life on the line for your friends. You are my friends when you do the things I command you. I’m no longer calling you servants because servants don’t understand what their master is thinking and planning. No, I’ve named you friends because I’ve let you in on everything I’ve heard from the Father.” John 15:12-15 The Message Bible
Recently a visitor to our church commented how welcomed they felt the first time they attended Watermark Church. People respond positively when they are noticed by others, loved and accepted for who they are and where they are in life. That is how friends treat each other.
Jesus offered His friendship to His disciples, and they flourished within the love and genuine interest He showed toward them.
It is our friendship with those around us that can produce lifelong bonds, and our friendship is also the foundation to helping others grow in their relationship with Christ.
Prayerfully consider your sphere of influence: family, acquaintances, co-workers, neighbors, newcomers to church. Where is God working in the lives of your friends?
“Good friendships are developed by spending time together sharing common interests.”
Begin a friendship with them and allow God to show you how to encourage them in their journey of faith.
Here are several qualities of friendship that can help you deepen your relationships and enable you to influence others to join you in maturing as followers of Christ.
Believe God to build these qualities of friendship into your life and into your friend’s lives. The definitions offer practical application and insights as well.
A. INITIATES 1 John 4:19
Definition: Taking the first step to further my relationship with another.
B. OPENNESS Proverbs 28:13
Definition: The willingness to share thoughts, emotions, and values with others and involve them with me.
C. LOYALTY John 13:1
Definition: Being faithful to another NO MATTER WHAT.
D. GIVING Proverbs 11:25

E. ACCEPTANCE Romans 15:7

F. UNSELFISHNESS Philippians 2:3,4

G. ENJOY Romans 15:24

H. AVAILABILITY 1 Thessalonians 2:8

I. SERVANT Mark 10:45

Ask God to help you be a great friend to those around you. It is well worth the investment of time and genuine concern for others. It is the soil from which lifelong, Christ-honoring relationships can grow!!
