Dear Watermark Church family,

“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; 2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.” 1 John 2:1,2

Each year, as summer approaches, I set up our small above ground pool. As the water fills the pool, numerous small holes emerge, which require vinyl patches and strong glue to repair. No matter how hard I try, the glue remains powerfully stuck on my fingers, sometimes for days. Attempts to remove the glue by hand are futile, until it wears off on its own.

Like glue, often the guilt of our sins sticks to our hearts and our consciences for days. We live in fear of God and others, because we feel we deserve punishment. Or we punish ourselves, so God won’t be so hard on us. Or we become bitter at God because we feel He is punishing us for our sin. Or we simply blame others for our failures.

The truth is, YOU ARE DEEPLY LOVED BY GOD, even when you sin! A believer in Christ does not need to fear God’s punishment. In fact, out of love, Christ has borne the punishment we deserve for disobedience to God. John states that Jesus is our propitiation, which means God sacrificed His Son, Jesus, in order to turn away, or propitiate, His wrath that we deserved and put it on Jesus.

Christ’s act at Calvary is the greatest weapon against Satan’s lie that states you are not loved by God when you fail to obey Him. The wrath of a holy and just God, which we deserved, has been satisfied as it was put on Christ at the cross.

When we sin, there is nothing we can do ourselves to remove the guilt, the shame, the power or the penalty of our sins. But it is what Jesus did, when He died and rose from the grave, that removes the stain of our sins far from us, far from God and makes us clean in His eyes. It is our faith, as we believe in the resurrection of Jesus, that removes our guilt and shame. Those who believe in Jesus are made pure and are saved from their sin and its penalty of separation from God.

The apostle John says in the verse above that if we sin, Jesus is our Advocate, or one who pleads our case of righteousness before the Father in heaven. If we believe in Jesus, we are looked upon by the Father as being as pure and holy as Jesus! Now that is cause to rejoice, and that is motivation to want to obey God!! Thanks be to God for our Advocate, the One who pleads my case – Jesus!
