Dear Watermark Church family,

This week, enjoy this story with an encouraging reminder of keeping an eternal perspective in this life.

There was an eager but small kid who joined the football team. He gave it everything he had but never excelled. The kid never missed a practice but he never got in the game.

In his senior year—right before a big playoff game—the coach gave the kid a note he received from the office.  The kid read it and became silent… and then he told the coach, “My father died this morning.” The coach consoled him as the boy walked away.

Saturday came… and the playoff game was not going well. The team was losing and all hope seemed to be lost. But then in the third quarter, the coach noticed the kid coming from the locker room. All the players were surprised to see him there.

The kid said, “Coach, please let me play today! I’ve got to play right now!” The coach ignored him at first. There was no way he was going to put his worst player in for this crucial game. But the kid kept persisting, “Coach, please let me in the game!” Finally, the coach thought, “We’re behind and about to lose anyhow.” He said, “Ok kid, you can go in.”

Immediately, the coach, the players and everyone in the stands were amazed by what they saw. The kid, who had never been in a game before, played with new energy. This little unknown brought a needed spark to the team.

Soon the score was tied. In the closing seconds of the game, the kid intercepted a pass and ran all the way back for the winning touchdown. The fans cheered and his teammates carried him onto their shoulders.

Later, after the stands had emptied and the team had showered and left the locker room, the coach saw the kid by himself in the corner all alone.  He said, “Kid, you were fantastic today. What got into you?”

The kid answered, “Well, you know my dad died this week.”

The coach said, “Yes, of course... now I understand.”

The kid said, “Actually, you may not understand everything, Coach.  You see…, my dad was blind…and today was the first day he ever saw me play.”

God, our loving, heavenly Father, is watching us play the game of life today. Let's all excel for Him!

“Therefore, also we have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:9
